AANGAN

Location: Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh

Behind the quiet Burhani colony, amid the small, dimly lit row houses, stands a small, textured and patterned residence almost camouflaging with the ground on which it stands. This house, Aangan, in Madhya Pradesh, is smaller than it actually seems when you experience it. Don’t let its design deceive you.

The framework of the house is very similar to the organization of a family. Like parents are the central support system and every member depends on them, the garden forms the core of the house with every other space dependent on it.

Tiny Courtyard with a lot of plants - Aangan - Dhool Design Studio

One is drawn inside the residence through the light infiltrating into the courtyard. The bright ray of light gives way into the living area and further into the garden. The wall of the living area is covered like a blanket in the morning with rays of light permeating through the metal sheet. The interiors are deliberately white to reflect maximum daylight.

Despite being covered on three sides by walls, the house is very brightly lit throughout the day. The living room is sandwiched between a German schmeared wall texture and patterns of light penetrating through the metal screen.

Thermal comfort was of top priority. Artificial ventilation is harmful for our body and facilitating natural ventilation cuts down electricity bill. We took cue from the local houses. These houses have small openings to compress the hot air blowing in to make it cool. Similarly, the metal screen perforation permits Aangan to remain cool during the hot season and also protects it; letting Aangan breathe. The central courtyard further facilitates air flow in a hot and dry place like Mandsaur. The brick Jali, like the intricately designed havelis around Mandsaur, allows the inhabitants to peek out onto the streets without revealing themselves.

Dressed in perforation, voids, patterns and textures, Aangan glows in monochromatic tones of the desert in the morning. As soon as dawn hits, the light glowing through the punctured metal sheet and brick jali shines like stars in a dark night sky as if celebrating life everyday.
