PROJECT:

Tree house

LOCATION:

Mumbai

AREA :

2300 sq.ft

YEAR:

The Land

Located in Sion, Mumbai, the project sits on a long, narrow urban plot surrounded closely by neighboring buildings. The existing condition felt constrained—limited light, restricted openness, and a sense of being boxed in by adjacent structures. With minimal scope to expand outward, the site demanded a more inward and vertical response.

Client’s Vision

01

A home for a multi-generational family

02

Spaces that feel open, bright, and connected

03

A balance of privacy and togetherness

04

A sense of playfulness and surprise within everyday living

05

Efficient use of limited urban space

06

Comfortable aging for parents and engaging spaces for children

The Challenge

The primary challenge was working within a tight footprint in a dense urban setting while ensuring adequate light, ventilation, and a sense of openness. Creating a comfortable home for a multi-generational family within limited space required careful spatial planning. Balancing privacy with connection across floors, while avoiding a cramped or corridor-like experience, was central to the design.

The Process

The design strategy focused on building vertically while introducing an internal courtyard to bring in natural light and ventilation. Instead of relying on external openings, the house opens inward, creating its own micro-environment. A central staircase acts as the main circulation spine, connecting all levels while visually linking spaces.

Levels were slightly staggered to create visual connections without compromising privacy. This allowed family members to remain aware of each other’s presence without direct overlap of spaces. Light was carefully introduced from above through skylights and perforations, ensuring it travels down through the home. Each level was planned with a specific function, creating a gradual transition from public to private spaces.

The Outcome

The house transforms a constrained urban plot into a layered, breathable living environment. Despite its compact footprint, it feels open and dynamic, with light and air moving freely across levels. The central courtyard and staircase create a strong spatial identity while supporting everyday interactions within the family. Each floor offers a distinct experience, yet remains connected to the whole. The result is a home that feels both intimate and expansive—designed to adapt to different generations while maintaining a sense of warmth, movement, and continuity.
